I established Smarty Cat Games in June 2012 as I found it so hard to get good quality teaching resources for Irish.
Working as a teacher myself I know how long one can spend getting exciting and interesting resources ready for class. However, hours are precious and it was with this thought in mind that I decided to develop games that could be used to make learning Irish really fun and engaging for children, whilst at the same time cutting down on preparation time for teachers. As you can see from our ‘products’ page we currently have the following games available: Cluichi Gaeilge, The Chatty Cat Ball, Cé Mhéad Cat? (Past/Present of irregular verbs), and Cé Mhéad Cat? (Past/Future tense of irregular verbs).
In addition to school use, these games are a fantastic resource for parents to have and play with their child at home. They give parents an opportunity to connect with what the child is learning in school and contribute to an overall more positive experience of learning Irish.

Cluichí Gaeilge is used to assist children with learning Irish in a fun and informal manner. It consists of ten games that are based on the ten themes of the National Curriculum for Gaeilge. The games in the pack vary to ensure that children don’t get bored playing the same style of game over and over. They help to broaden and compound the vocabulary and phrases that children acquire. Through playing these games children’s oral language skills and confidence at using the language also grows. They come in an easy to store plastic transparent box.
These games are designed for children from the ages of five to twelve years of age. Some of the vocabulary may be new to the younger children and learning it through the use of these informal games can be a great way to assist the children. Playing these games also benefits the older children as the games act as a great revision activity.

The Chatty Cat Ball contains 21 questions and actions to help children develop their oral language skills in a really exciting and fun way. It develops children’s ability to speak about themselves in front of their peers. Children throw the ball around the class/around the circle and ask each other questions (depending on where their right hand lands). This activity ensures that children become actively involved in their own learning, rather than merely being bystanders watching what is going on.

This exciting game assists children with learning the corresponding past and present tense of irregular verbs in a really fun way. By playing this game children get a good handle on the irregular verbs, without having to spend endless hours rote learning. Children learn so much more when they are actually enjoying the activity at hand, playing this game helps the players to become much more confident in their knowledge of the past and present tense of irregular verbs.
